Over the past 20 years, technological advancements have achieved significant strides in the fields of diagnostic microbiology, including bacteriology, mycology, mycobacteriology, parasitology, and virology. Technological advancements have had a significant impact on work flow, turnaround time, staffing patterns, and the physical layout of laboratories. Molecular approaches based on nucleic acid amplification can be used to deliver fast, on-demand, and complementary diagnosis services. These developments will not stop and eventually elevate diagnostic microbiology to the status of a cutting-edge field ready to take on any obstacles in the future.
